Start of term update January 2025
Tuesday, 21 January, 2025
As we prepare for the Spring Trimester, we wanted to bring to your attention a couple of items that we feel could assist you in the use of Brightspace to support your teaching.
UCD VLE Module Standards Policy
All modules in Brightspace now come with the VLE Standards Units available by default. Instructors should ensure that modules follow this consistent structure to ensure students can easily locate learning material while also aiding a consistent student experience across all modules.
UCD Teaching and Learning has prepared a guide on Module Design in Brightspace which gives an overview on how the Learning materials section should adhere to the UCD's VLE Module Standard Framework.
Brightspace Training and Workshops
New to UCD or just want to refresh your knowledge of how to use Brightspace? We offer a number of training sessions to assist you. For a full list of training and workshops see our Booking Centre offerings.
Checkout our (opens in a new window)module setup checklist to assist you in getting your Brightspace modules ready for the start of term.
VLE Retention Policy
A reminder that the VLE retention policy came into effect in May 2024. The first tranche of modules have been deleted as part of the implementation of this policy and modules will continue to be deleted from the system in line with the retention periods specified within the policy.
Please ensure you retain any information from Brightspace that you may require for future reference either by copying information to your sandbox, or you can bulk download learning and assessment material. Further information can be found on the VLE retention policy webpage.
New Content Experience
UCD is moving all modules to the Brightspace New Content Experience (NCE) for the 2025/26 academic year. Instructors can start to use the New Content Experience in your Spring Trimester modules now. In the Autumn Trimester almost 1,000 modules started using the New Content Experience successfully. Why not get involved this Spring ahead of the roll out next year.
Check out the new NCE Module readiness widget on the home pages of your teaching modules to assist you in getting started with the New Content Experience. You can also keep up to date on upcoming training, enhancements and next steps on our dedicated Brightspace New Content Experience (NCE) webpage. Why not book onto a training session or a dedicated 1:1 session with a member of the team to assist you in your move to the New Content Experience.
Peer Review
Our Peer Review pilot continues this term with Feedback Fruits. If you would like to implement peer review or group member evaluation in your module, you can still sign up for the pilot via (opens in a new window)this form. Further information and support are available on the Peer Review project webpage.
Brightspace Groups
If you have a large class (greater than 50), IT Services can assist you in creating groups by CRN or from a CSV file. Further information on creating groups in Brightspace can be found on the (opens in a new window)IT Support Hub.
Information on services offered by IT Services relating to Brightspace can be found on the IT Services Website, with further information and support available on the IT Support Hub.
