Module Types & Roles

Type of Module Purpose of Module Which module suits my needs? How to request this module

Academic Module

All credit bearing modules, delivered by faculty to students of the University

  • Enrolments are driven solely from an integration between Banner and Brightspace
  • Faculty/Staff are allocated to academic modules using the MAMs system
  • Academic Modules on Brightspace are named with their official module title, module code and the teaching period in which they are being delivered, e.g. ACC10040-Financial Accounting 1 2018/19 Semester 2
  • Grades can be pulled into Gradebook (Infohub) from academic modules

A new instance of each module is created dynamically for each teaching period in which the module is taught.
No intervention is required to have an academic module created.

Resit Module A (new) module offering for students who are resitting
  • A (new) module offering is created only if there are students enrolled to the resit CRN
  • Content for the resit students can be added to this new module offering
  • Grade transfer does not apply to resit modules/CRNs
  • Resit modules follow the same naming convention as academic modules
  • Faculty and staff are enrolled to these modules using the MAMs system
No intervention is required to have an academic module created.
Sandbox Module A personal module for each staff/faculty member of the University, for their own use when training or experimenting with different features and functionality.
  • No other users are enrolled in this module
  • The sandbox does not get cleared out or removed
  • Test student accounts may be added to this module type (only) if needed. A maximum of 4 test accounts can be requested.

All staff will have a sandbox module automatically generated for them, the sandbox module is named in the form “ConnectUsername_sbox”

To request the addition of (up to 4) test student accounts to your sandbox module contact IT  Services
*Test accounts cannot be added to any other module type.

Programme Space A space that is being used to provide administrative resources to all students on the same programme, managed by Programme Office staff
  • All students on the same programme are enrolled automatically
  • Undergraduate programme spaces use Brightspace ‘sections’ to group students by stage
  • Postgraduate programme spaces use Brightspace ‘sections’ to group students by major
  • Programme Spaces are managed and maintained by Programme Office staff
  • Programme Spaces are perpetual, this means that students move in and out of these modules as they complete their programme of study.
  • Unlike academic modules a new module does not get created each teaching period.
  • Programme spaces are not suitable for assessment of student work.

To request a programme module please contact IT Services

To request additional staff to be added to a Programme Space, the College Office Director should contact IT Services, specifying the programme code and usernames of the staff requiring access.

  • Students self-enrol to these modules using the “Explore” menu item
  • Modules are optional for students and do not form part of the accredited programme, however they may complement it.
  • Modules should have broad appeal
  • There is no link to the module descriptor available for Explore modules (as they are non-Banner).
  • Grades cannot be pulled from these modules to Infohub Gradebook.
  • All content must be in place prior to the module being made available for users to self enrol via the ‘Explore’ menu.
