Checklist: Before The Quiz Start Date

Check Your Quiz Date Restrictions

Quiz restrictions allow instructors to optionally set start dates, due dates, and end dates on their quizzes. They are in the Timing & Display section when editing a quiz.

The Start Date determines when a quiz becomes available to students.

A Due Date is the date (and time) deadline for submitting a quiz.  However a student may submit after the Due Date (and can enter a quiz up until an End Date, if one is set), in which case it is marked late, in red, in both the instructor and the student view.

An End Date is more restrictive.  It cuts off entry to the quiz at the End Date and time set, where the student can no longer start a quiz.
It is strongly advisable that if setting an End Date that it allows for a reasonable buffer time after the Due Date. This buffer time could be valuable for students experiencing difficulties. All late submissions are indicated in Brightspace.

(Note: If a student already has a quiz attempt in progress at the End Date, they will be able to continue the attempt, until the quiz time limit is reached.)

Set-up Special Access for Specified Students

Instructors can use the Special Access feature to give specified students:

  • Different Dates settings
  • Different Time Limits
  • Different Number of Attempts

Special Access settings are found in the Availability Dates & Conditions section, when editing a quiz.

Check The Student Experience Of Your Time Limit Settings

Time Limit options are found in the Timing & Display section when editing a quiz. The default setting is 'No time limit'.

You can choose between Recommended and Enforced Time Limits

Selecting Enforced Time Limits will display a clock to the student during an attempt, counting down the remaining time.  The time display will flash continuously once the grace period begins.

For Enforced Time Limits, there are options for Exceeded Time Limit Behaviour, as follows:

After the grace period, flag the quiz attempt as exceeded time limit, and

  1. Allow the student to continue working, or
  2. Prevent the student from making further changes (This option ensures that students cannot alter their responses at the end of the time limit, however the students must still click Submit), or
  3. Allow the student to continue working, but automatically score the attempt as zero after an extended deadline

You can use the Quiz Preview feature to experience your chosen time limit settings as a student.   To do this, when you are in the Quiz Preview, untick the box to “bypass restrictions”.

Decide Whether to Show Or Hide Quiz Scores Immediately Upon Completion

When setting up a Quiz, the grades related settings are found in the Evaluation & Feedback section.

In the Evaluation & Feedback section you can choose whether or not to show grades to students immediately upon completion.

NB: The default setting is Auto-publish attempt results immediately upon completion

If you do not want to show the score to students immediately upon completion, then uncheck the Auto-Publish box.

Preview Your Quiz

The Quiz Preview option allows instructors to view the quiz and to experience what the student will see during an attempt.

To use the quiz Preview feature:

  1. In your module, navigate to Assessment - Quizzes
  2. Click on the downward arrow beside the name of the quiz you want (this displays the context menu)
  3. Select Preview
Use test student IDs to do your quiz before running the quiz in your module

Use test student IDs in your sandbox to experience the quiz as a student (recommended). This allows the instructor to check the full student experience of your quizzes, including all time limits and restrictions you place on your quiz.

It also allows instructors to do a trial run of the workflows for manually grading a quiz (if using open ended questions).

Contact (opens in a new window)IT Services and ask for test students for your sandbox module.

Ask a Colleague to Review Your Quiz

It can be helpful to get another colleague on your module delivery team to review your quiz, including description and instructions to students, as well as question content.

If you have test students in your sandbox, you can ask a colleague to log in as the test student to complete the quiz.

If you want to get test students for your sandbox module, contact (opens in a new window)IT Services.

Create A Practice/Trial Quiz For Your Students To Do A Trial Run

Once you have finalised your preferred settings for your quiz, you can make a mini version for your students to use as a trial run. Encourage them to take the practice quiz in the same environment
