Dr Dorota Szelewa participated in Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility (Erasmus+ICM - Staff Mobility) delivering teaching and training at Hokkaido University’s Graduate School of Public Policy in Sapporo, Japan between 10 and 15 June 2024.

Seminar at the Slavic Eurasian Research Center, Hokkaido University
The UCD Centre for Japanese Studies, formally affiliated with the School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice, successfully obtained this competitive Erasmus+ICM funding, for the second time in 2022, jointly with the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine under the research theme of ‘One Health’. The bid was led again by Prof. Stephen Gordon & Assoc. Prof. Naonori Kodate – both members of the Centre.
The academic and teaching exchange involved mutual learning about the pedagogical methods and tools applied to public policy teaching, providing teaching and training within the field of public policy studies presenting the European perspective and specific case studies as possibly applied to the Japanese context. During her stay at Hokkaido University, Dr Szelewa gave a lecture on “Social Investment in welfare policy making: the approach and a gender perspective”, a seminar discussion for graduate students of her research on voluntary childless population in Poland, as well as a presentation “'Right-wing populist governments and the issue of gender relations in Poland and in Hungary” followed by a lively discussion.
The visit resulted in students being exposed to a different approach to teaching, in-class discussion, new forms of student engagement, but also in making initial plans for further academic and teaching/training exchange.
