Elective Spotlight: Chinese
The two main dialects of Chinese are Mandarin and Cantonese. Mandarin is used more prominently – in fact, 22.6% of overall internet use is in Mandarin. With over 900 million native speakers, it is by far the most widely spoken mother tongue in the world.
In total, over 1.1 billion people speak Chinese, which is an official language in China, Taiwan, Singapore and Myanmar. It is also one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

The Structured Elective in Chinese Language offers a list of modules helping the students who have no previous Chinese learning experience to command basic skills to communicate in Chinese. If a student successfully completes elective modules amounting to a minimum of 15 credits their official transcript will state that in addition to their degree they have also been awarded a “Structured Elective in Chinese Language”.
