Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)
The UCD School of Mathematics and Statistics is committed to ensuring fair treatment and opportunity for all staff and students in every area of their work and to eradicating prejudice and discrimination. This effort is part of the School’s commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI):
Equality – ensuring that no individual or group of individuals is treated less favourably because of their protected characteristics.
Diversity – recognising, respecting and embracing each other's differences, with the aim of creating an environment that will inspire creativity and drive innovation.
Inclusion – creating an environment where everyone feels welcome and valued and establishing a sense of belonging among all members of the School.
Irish Law, under the Equal Status Acts 2000-2018 and the Employment Equality Acts 1998-2015, outlaws discrimination across a wide range of areas. It lists in particular certain characteristics, often referred to as protected characteristics, which are protected under these laws. It is illegal to discriminate against anyone on the basis of any of these characteristics.
These include:
- Gender
- Civil status
- Family status
- Sexual orientation
- Religion
- Age
- Disability
- Race
- Membership of the Traveller community
Discrimination (including direct discrimination, indirect discrimination, bullying, harassment and victimisation) on the grounds of any of these characteristics is illegal.
