Bio: I started out as an undergraduate student studying Theoretical Physics at UCD. After graduating from my undergraduate degree I was keen to continue studying, so I applied for an Irish Research Council PhD fellowship. I was awarded the fellowship and embarked on a PhD in Mathematical Physics, with the focus of my research being general relativity, black holes and gravitational waves.
Once I completed my PhD, I travelled the world, working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Max-Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in Germany and in the Department of Astronomy at Cornell University. I then returned to UCD as a postdoctoral researcher, again funded by an Irish Research Council Fellowship. Most recently, I was appointed as a member of the faculty in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at UCD, where I now work as an Associate Professor and Head of Applied and Computational Mathematics.

Bio: I studied Applied & Computational Mathematics in UCD from 2017 to 2021. In summer of 2020 between Stage 3 and Stage 4 of my degree, I worked as a Data Analytics Intern in the Trading department of Paddy Power Betfair. I continued working there part time during my final year and started full time employment in June of 2021.
The summer internship is a great opportunity to get a taste of what it is like to apply skills learned in university in the workplace and to gain an understanding of what kind of work you may like to do. In my case, I found that I enjoy working as a data analyst where I use SQL, Python and R to provide analytical insights in areas such as pricing accuracy, risk management and sports modelling.

Bio: I completed my degree in UCD in 2007 and began a PhD in UCD through a scholarship from the Claude Shannon Institute for Coding, Cryptography, and Discrete Mathematics under the supervision of Prof Rod Gow. After completing my thesis, I obtained a position as a postdoctoral researcher at the Universitá di Padova, Italy, for one year. After a short 6-month position as a postdoctoral visitor at VUB (Brussels), I obtained an FWO postdoctoral scholarship at Ghent University in Belgium.
In 2015 I returned to UCD as a Lecturer/Assistant Professor. In 2019 I obtained an Ad Astra Fellowship to remain in this position. I thoroughly enjoyed my studies in UCD both as an undergrad and postgrad. My degree provided me with the opportunity to travel and work abroad, expanding my horizons in both research and personal capacities. I am delighted to have been able to return to UCD to continue my research and pay forward this education to our students.
Degree: BSc Applied and Computational Mathematics Current job title: Information Analyst, Public Health, Scotland
Bio: Public Health Scotland is a branch of the NHS which deals with the analysis of all public health data in Scotland. They provide analysis and reports about issues such as COVID-19 figures, cancer rates, mental health etc. to the public and the government. I am working on the Cancer and Adult Screening team. We work with all of the breast, cervical and bowel screening centres around the country. We perform annual audits of the centres and publish our findings in a report with us then brought to parliament. This is my first job after finishing my masters at the University of Edinburgh last year in Computational Applied Mathematics
Bio: I graduated from UCD in 2019 with a degree in Applied and Computational Mathematics. During my years of study I had tutored in the maths support centre as well as tutoring level 1 mathematics modules for the school. I decided to take a year out after I finished my degree and took the time to explore my options. During this year I worked as a substitute teacher in secondary schools. I decided teaching was not my goal but I was grateful for the experience and the chance to try something new.
I now work as a PhD student under Prof. Frederic Dias and Prof. Vikram Pakrashi. I am studying the effect of different meteorological conditions on water waves. My work involves both desk work (data analysis, coding, experimental design), and also field work where I deploy my experiments and collect the data. The field work is carried out on Inis Meáin and I am otherwise based here in UCD.

Bio: My career journey started pretty recently! I graduated with a BSc in Statistics in 2020 and completed a 12-month graduate taught masters in Artificial Intelligence for Medicine and Medical Research in 2021 before joining StatisticaMedica as a Senior Data Scientist in August 2022.
I’ve always had a passion for maths, data science and analysis and so getting to apply that within my masters which would then go on to prepare me for a role within biostatistics was incredible. At the moment I am helping to prepare clinical trial datasets for submission to regulatory bodies around the world and am learning and further developing my knowledge within biostatistics as a whole while also developing as a professional.

Bio: I did a BSc and MSc at UCD, after which I received the Travelling Studentship in Mathematical Sciences from the National University of Ireland. My doctoral work was at Universität Tübingen, Germany and UCD. I held a permanent lectureship in the Department of Mathematics, St. Patrick's College, Maynooth before returning to UCD. I’ve held fellowships from the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach, Germany and from EPSRC, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council of the UK. I’m a professor since 2022. I’m the first female President, Vice-President and Secretary of the Irish Mathematical Society and have been a committee member of the Physical, Chemical and Mathematical Sciences Committee of the Royal Irish Academy from 2014-2022.
My research involves spaces with symmetry, known as JB*-triples, straddling analysis, algebra and geometry. Recently I worked on evolution algebras, which were introduced in 2006 to model certain genetic phenomena. I’ve received a Teaching Excellence Award for my lecturing, I’ve co-organised 6 international conferences and have received numerous funding awards.

Bio: ETF Data Analysts/Trading Analysts work closely with the traders at Virtut and ETF issuers to understand their products and pricing methodologies. We build models to accurately price funds in many assets including commodities, equities, fixed income and emerging asset classes like cryptocurrencies. We deliver on time accurate pricing working in tandem with the trading team to deliver best in class pricing models. Coupled with this the analysts work to identify trading opportunities around various events by interpreting past behaviours of the funds and their characteristics around such events.

Bio: I entered UCD Science in 2015 following the Maths and Physics pathway. I chose the education route in my third year and in 2019 I graduated with a BSc in Mathematics and Physics Education. I completed my MSc in Mathematics and Science Education one year later before beginning my teaching career in Loreto College Foxrock as a Physics teacher I, then, was employed in Clonkeen College Blackrock as a maths and science teacher. In March, 2021 I was one of the teacher representatives for Ireland at Science on Stage, the European science teacher conference. I presented my active research o n the use of Drama in the science classroom. I moved to the US in August 2022 after being accepted on a J1 Teacher exchange program. I am currently a STEM teacher(Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in Virginia, United States. I am teaching in an elementary school where I hope to influence young students' exposure to the scientific and technological world through play and exploration.
Bio: I graduated with a BSc in Financial Mathematics in 2022 and enjoyed a mix of both in person and online learning during my four years in UCD. During my third year, I participated in the Summer Internship Programme with Accenture. I applied under the consulting stream but after explaining my technical background with analytics throughout the interview process, I was put on a data engineering team with one of Ireland’s largest energy providers. At the end of the internship, I was offered a position on Accenture’s graduate programme in the data analytics stream for the following September. I am now currently working as a data science analyst with one of Ireland’s largest banks in their credit risk department. Some of what I am working on currently has been directly related to modules I’ve undertaken in college, especially those which involved any type of coding. I’m really enjoying my time in Accenture and would absolutely recommend the data analytics graduate programme.

Bio: I graduated from UCD with a BSc in Mathematical Science in 1989, and an MSc in Mathematics in 1990. I went to the USA for my PhD, which was awarded from the California Institute of Technology in 1995. After a position as a Whyburn Research Instructor at the University of Virginia, I returned to Ireland as a lecturer in Maynooth, and then joined UCD in 2006. I was director of the SFI-funded Claude Shannon Institute for research in coding theory and cryptography from 2006-2012, and I was Head of the School of Mathematics and Statistics from 2014-2017.
Degree: BSc and PhD in Mathematics Current job title: Senior Operations Executive, Irish Medicines Verification Organisation
Bio: After finishing a PhD in Mathematics in 2020 I began working for the Irish Medicines Verification Organisation (IMVO) as an Operations Executive at the start of 2021. IMVO’s role is to ensure the implementation of a functioning, secure and cost-effective medicines verification system, helping to protect Irish patients from the threat of falsified medicines being supplied through legitimate channels. IMVO is a non-profit organisation established in 2017 by the key stakeholders in the medicines supply chain in Ireland to manage the national medicines verification system for Ireland. My role entails being responsible for supporting the Chief Executive and management team in the management of activities within IMVO, including the IMVS (Irish Medicines Verification System) and IT related projects, in particular, for alert management support and carrying out other day-to-day operational activities. In late 2021 I became the Senior Operations Executive at IMVO, where I took on more responsibilities relating to automation of business processes and increasing business intelligence in the organisation, along with responsibilities within the umbrella of EMVO (European Medicines Verification Organisation) via working groups with European colleagues.
Bio: I began studying in UCD in September 2016, specialising in Financial Maths from my third year onwards, having initially also held an interest in both pure Maths and Applied Maths. Over the course of my final year, I began looking for entry level jobs which I could apply for that weren’t directly finance-related and I accepted a position as an Assistant in EY’s Data & Analytics practice. In the two and a half years since joining, I have progressed to the role of a Senior Analyst within the consulting area of Data Analytics and have used a wide range of technologies to implement scenario analyses or predictive models for various clients, as well as learning a whole lot about the areas of data engineering, data integration and data visualisation which I would not have directly learned about in college. I also currently help run the graduate training program within Data Analytics where we facilitate monthly three-hour long training.
Bio: I studied Financial Mathematics at UCD, graduating in 2021. Currently, I am an Applied Intelligence Consultant at KPMG, where I provide clients with guidance concerning data and analytics. During my time at KPMG, I have worked on a data migration project between two large Irish banks. Key activities in this project included data validation and compiling reports using cloud computing. Additionally, I have been involved in designing a dashboard which automates and displays various tax calculations.
