Abstract
An expected source of gravitational waves is the capture and inspiral of a solar mass black hole into a supermassive black hole. Black hole perturbation theory considers the small black hole to be a point particle moving in accelerated motion in the spacetime of the large black hole. This accelerated motion is due to the particle interating with it's own gravitational field and is called the self-force. Calculation of this force requires calculation of the field at the particle. This field is in general divergent at the particle and requires regularisation. We present a new, simple method for calculating the self-force acting on a particle in orbit around a Kerr black hole. We formulate a practical scheme for constructing the self-force directly from the 2+1-dimensional m-modes. Finally, we discuss an implementation of this new technique for time-domain numerical evolution of the scalar- field generated by a pointlike scalar charge.
