On the thermalization of the $\alpha$-Fermi-Pasta-Ulam system

Abstract:

I investigate theoretically the $\alpha$-Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) system. I will show that the dynamics is ruled by a six-wave interaction process. The nonlinear time scale for thermalization is estimated to be at least of the order of $1/\alpha^8$, with $\alpha$ being the small nonlinear spring constant. This observation provides a comprehensive explanation of the lack of observation of thermalization in many numerical simulations of the $\alpha$-FPU system.
