Much of the data now relevant in social sciences, business and policy making is large scale and multivariate. None of the quantitative methods taught in school mathematics are of any use in understanding these complex data sets, they are hard to get to grips with in tabular form and often formal statistical techniques are not helpful because with large data sets significance is relatively easy to come by even if the differences are not of any practical importance. Data visualisations developed by the SMART Centre at Durham University offer a way of visualising multivariate data sets in ways that are accessible to most people - even those who profess limited mathematical aptitude and no enthusiasm for statistics. A bold claim - come and see the visualisations and make your own mind up.
