Dr Marie-Louise is an Assistant Professor in Diagnostic Imaging in UCD. She has taught extensively and coordinated modules across the Radiography and Medicine programmes. Her research interests are varied and include healthcare management, radiation safety, quality and risk management in healthcare and implementation of research in clinical practice. She has supervised a number of MSc and PhD students to date, in a range of subject areas including radiology screening programmes, optimising radiographic image quality and understanding the impact of the introduction of mandatory CPD for radiographers in Ireland.
She has held a number of key roles at national and international level including being a member of the executive board of the EU funded QuDRANT programme; education representative on the Irish Institute of Radiographers and Radiation Therapists; member of the European Society of Radiology Quality, Safety and Standards Committee (Audit and Standards Subcommittee) representing the European Federation of Radiographer Societies; member of the International Advisory Group for the Radiography Journal, including the subgroup focusing on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the journal.
Dr Ryan is an active member of several UCD ethics committees including UTMREC, HREC and SPIRE. She was recently awarded a group Values in Action award from UCD for her role as a Dignity & Respect Contact Person. Marie-Louise completed her MBA with Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh in 2022. She took career leave from UCD to take up the Head of Clinical Services role in Global Diagnostics (now Medica), which was a significant clinical and operational leadership role across 30 private and public radiology contracts together with managing over 100 clinical and non-clinical staff.
