John (Jock) McGrath was a native of Mount Rivers, Cappoquin, Co Waterford.
He was educated at Clongowes Wood College and then at UCD when he graduated at UCD with a BSc in 1921 and then an MSc in 1922.
Having decided upon medicine as a career, Jock went to take the MB. BCh. Degrees in 1925, proceeding to the MD in 1940.
He later studied pathology in Vienna and Manehim University. On his return to Ireland, he joined that staff of St Vincent’s Hospital, D4 as a Pathologist and also became Pathologist in the National Maternity Hospital (NMH), Dublin. He was appointed Assistant Pathologist to St Vincent’s Hospital in 1927.
He developed a particular interest in forensic medicine and was appointed State Pathologist from 1929 to 1953.
Jock was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at UCD in 1956. He was also Professor of Medical Jurisprudence and examined in medical jurisprudence for the Dublin and Glasgow Universities and for the Queen’s University of Belfast (QUB).
Jock McGrath graduated from UCD School of Medicine in 1940.
