Dr Mick Molloy receives prestigious alumni achievement award

Congratulations to Dr Mick Molloy, whose contributions to the field World Medicine Stethoscopeof Disaster Medicine have been recognised. Dr Molloy has received the annual Alumni Achievement award from the Disaster Medicine Fellowship program, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians.

The Alumni Achievement award is given annually to one of the over 100 alumni from around the world as selected by the faculty.

Prof Gregory Ciottone, Assoc Prof Emergency Medicine Harvard Medical School and Co-Director of the Fellowship in Disaster Medicine program, Amalia Voskanyan, presented the award. Prof Ciottone has noted, ‘’Dr Molloy has been on the faculty of the program for over 10 years now and has provided education and research guidance to fellows during that time. His accomplishments in the field of mass gathering medicine are also highlighted by this award.’’

Dr Molloy states, “I am truly honoured to receive this BIDMC Fellowship in Disaster Medicine Alumni Achievement award from Prof Ciottone and Ms Voskanyan. I am grateful for the support I have received from UCD and Wexford General hospital allowing me to pursue my subspecialty. This is a subject I have been passionate about for two decades and until the COVID pandemic and recent international humanitarian emergencies it has been difficult to explain what exactly disaster medicine is and what we do. That however has changed, and the volume of research being published has increased exponentially. At the INEC in Killarney, where I was presented with the award, we recently hosted the World Association of Disaster and Emergency Medicine biannual congress which brought over 700 international delegates including national and international body representatives such as the WHO Mass Gathering Collaborating group and EMT initiative. To hear the work these individuals do is inspiring and hopefully the next generation of leaders in this field will emerge from those attendees in Killarney, some of whom may be from Ireland.”

Congratulations again to Dr Molloy on this terrific recognition.
