Congratulations to final medical students Anna Lawless, Joanna Hennessy, Maria Springael and Aoife Mangan who have won the Dr Jack Flanagan Medal in the all-Ireland intervarsity competition in geriatric medicine.
As stated on the TCD website, the Medal was established in 2008 by the Dublin Ageing Research Network (DARN). The competition recognises Dr Flanagan’s ground-breaking contributions to geriatric medicine in Ireland. Students from University of Limerick, University College Cork, University of Galway, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, University College Dublin, Trinity College and Queens University Belfast too part. For the first time in the history of this competition, Ulster University was represented with an academic on the judging panel.
The objective of the annual competition is to foster interest in geriatric medicine and inspire medical students to become more proficient in the specialised care of older patients.
TCD Gerontology hosted the competition and a special mention to tutors Sarah Gorey, Pádraig Synnott and Celia Fernandez who coached the UCD team. Dr Jack Flanagan’s family attended the competition.
It was a tough competition, so well done to all seven competing teams.
