Following completion of specialist training in Endocrinology, Diabetes Mellitus & general internal medicine Prof Moran undertook a fellowship in thyroid disease at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and the University of Cambridge, during which time she obtained her PhD degree, characterising human aspects of Resistance to Thyroid Hormone (RTH).
Subsequently employed as a consultant endocrinologist at Addenbrookes Hospital, Prof Moran led the specialist thyroid service, and developed specialist thyroid services (thyroid disease in pregnancy, rare thyroid disorders, alemtuzumab induced thyroid dysfunction and virtual clinics), expanded a multidisciplinary thyroid biopsy clinic, while conducting busy general thyroid and endocrine clinics.
She has an interest in investigation of discordant thyroid function, having directed a national referral service for patients with unusual thyroid function tests while in Cambridge, and having published novel causes of such abnormal biochemistry. Prof Moran continues to perform research on RTH, such as that mediated by abnormal forms of the Thyroid Hormone receptor (alpha or beta), or selenoprotein deficiency and have produced over 40 publications. She is a member of European guideline committees for Thyroid Dysfunction following immune reconstitution therapy and Resistance to Thyroid Hormone.
Significant teaching contributions include developing and leading the Reflection, Learning & Teaching Strand of Professionalism Curriculum, delivering thyroid undergraduate teaching and examining at MB level at the University of Cambridge. Prof Moran has also developed a highly successful national thyroid masterclass for postgraduate trainees.
Prof Moran maintains roles in national societies, such as the British Thyroid Association (secretary), Society for Endocrinology (convenor thyroid network, programme organising committee member BES meeting), American Thyroid Association (History and Archives committee member) and she is an editorial board member for the Journal of the Endocrine Society.
