Congratulations to final year UCD Medicine student, Aren Mnatzakanian, on his latest publication being accepted into the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR), the official journal of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR). Aren is the second and corresponding author for the research.
The article is titled ‘Genicular Artery Embolization for Symptomatic Knee Osteoarthritis in a Patient with Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome’. This was a project Aren worked on during his away elective in IR at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie, Ontario, Canada.
Congratulations also to third author, Dr Amandip Rakkar, who is a UCD Medicine graduate from the class of 2024.
Significance of research:
Genicular artery embolization (GAE) is known to be safe and effective in the management of refractory knee pain due to moderate-to-severe osteoarthritis (OA). However, there is a paucity of literature exploring the safety and efficacy of GAE for OA-associated knee pain management in complex congenital vascular malformation syndromes, such as Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome. The purpose of this paper is to describe a case using GAE for debilitating left knee OA as sequelae of KTS. The team demonstrate that GAE is a potentially safe therapeutic option for chronic pain management in knee OA secondary to congenital vascular malformation syndromes, where the vascular architecture may be inherently complex.
