Course Introduction

The development of eHealth nationally and internationally is substantially changing many of the current work and care delivery practices. The move from paper-based records to digital solutions will bring a large range of benefits, many complexities and some concerns / risks. The overarching aim of the course is to provide a good understanding of the field of Health Informatics (HI), its development and how it can impact the delivery of health at all levels from home based / community, GP, and up to the hospital sector. 

Course Features

  • The student should exit the course with a readily applicable knowledge base in the following aspects:

    • Health Data, its importance, management, display and use in managing patient care and delivery of the healthcare;
    • The IT systems used to capture and manage patient and health data;
    • Data analytics techniques in health, including emerging technologies in Machine Learning and AI;
    • Medical devices used to diagnose, manage and treat patients and the IT implications;
    • Methodologies required to successfully implement and evaluate HI projects.
    • Skills in performing research related projects within the area of Health Informatics

The course is primarily aimed at existing and future employees in the health service and IT industry sector who are looking to move into the area of Health Informatics, expand their current knowledge in the area, or get more involved in health IT implementation projects in their respective work locations. The assignments for the various modules are primarily focused on work-based topics, with these assignments being undertaken primarily as group or team work. This team-based process mirrors the actuality of IT systems implementation projects or health data / business intelligence analysis in this sector.

The course content will be delivered mainly on campus with some modules offering on-line delivery mode, while the majority are face-to-face modules.

The lecturers will come from both UCD and the Health Service to ensure an appropriate mix of theory and application in the content.

Eligibility criteria

  • Candidates should possess a primary University degree in Medicine or in an allied profession, or a primary degree in the area of Information Technology and experience working in the healthcare industry.
