This programme offers applicants the opportunity to develop high level clinical and academic knowledge of Hysterosalpingo-Contrast Sonography (HyCoSy), Saline Infusion Sonography (SIS) and 3D ultrasound scanning (3D US). This course is designed for sonographers (radiography, nursing and clinicians) experienced in transvaginal gynaecological scanning who wish to enhance these skills and learn the ultrasound techniques of tubal patency testing, uterine cavity assessment and 3D gynaecological scanning. The aim is to promote safe and competent clinical use of these procedures and 3D ultrasound imaging in diagnosing gynaecological pathologies such as uterine anomalies. The course will develop and expand the knowledge on the principles of 3D ultrasound, 3D image volume acquisition and application of post-processing software in gynaecology.
It will enable students to understand the indications for these ultrasound examinations, perform the procedures and scans and report on findings in the clinical context. The course is designed to provide both theoretical and practical training, with a significant emphasis on clinical experience.
This programme is delivered through a hybrid teaching approach. There is a requirement to attend 2 days teaching in UCD, engage with online teaching material and to complete a record of clinical practice.
This programme is available to those currently practising transvaginal ultrasound in a fertility or gynaecological clinic who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in the area of HyCoSy & SIS procedures and 3D ultrasound.
Applicants must provide written evidence of an agreement with a fertility/gynaecology ultrasound department to provide clinical ultrasound experience (minimum 70 hours) and clinical supervision throughout the programme. This agreement must be signed by the named clinical supervisor.
