Undergraduate

Psychiatry is taught at three stages in the medical degree.

Clinical 1 - this Clinical Skills module is part of both UEM and GEM.

Clinical 2 - one of four speciality placements in the late penultimate and early final years. Students rotate through along with Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Medicine in the Community. This is the main part of the teaching for Psychiatry and comprises a six week intense block of teaching and clinical placement, culminating in the final exams in Psychiatry which includes an OSCE. 

In Clinical 2 our students experience clinical placements at a range of sites, gaining exposure to adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, psychiatry of later life, liaison psychiatry, eating disorder psychiatry, perinatal psychiatry and psychiatry for homeless persons. These clinical placements are delivered at the following sites:

• Mater Misericordiae University Hospital
• St Vincent’s University Hospital
• St John of God’s Hospital
• St Vincent’s Hospital, Fairview
• Portlaoise Hospital
• HSE North Dublin CAMHS
• CHI – Temple Street and Crumlin
• Phoenix Care Centre, Dublin
• Programme for The Homeless, Dublin
• Eating Disorder Service, Mount Carmel

PCM - this module is in the final term of the degree and prepares students for intern year. The Psychiatry workshops at this stage are designed to be practical preparations for the sorts of issues interns are likely to encounter.
