I have been working as an intern in SVUH under Cardiology, Nephrology, General Surgery (Portlaoise) and Gynaecology/Ophthalmology. The transition from final year Med Student to Intern is certainly challenging, especially at the beginning. Key practical procedures such as intravenous cannulation and phlebotomy can be quite daunting in acute clinical scenarios. I have however received incredible support on the wards to date, from each team I have been with and when on-call. From scheduled teaching sessions, to intern led presentations and research opportunities, my learning has continued beyond the lecture halls of UCD. I think that my time in SVUH to date, has prepared me to further progress my career as an NCHD.
