This course will focus on literature and culture in Britain in the late 19th century and early 20th. This is seen by some critics as a time of crisis, but others point to a considerable degree of continuity between the Victorian period and what follows. In this course, then, we will look at a variety of texts in relation to contemporary issues, and consider the exact nature of the fin-de-siècle 'crisis'. Topics will include aestheticism and decadence; the 'New Woman'; and imperialism. Authors may include Wilde, Pater, Rider Haggard, Conan Doyle, Corelli, and Wells.

PLEASE NOTE that the School of English, Drama and Film reserves the right to withdraw modules in the period up to and including the first week of the teaching semester.
