Stephen Graham studied at U.C.D. between 2001 and 2005, first on the Arts degree (Music and Philosophy) and then on the BMus. I did a huge range of courses and seminars in that time, from intensive analysis with Julian Horton to cultural history with Harry White and philosophy and contemporary music with Wolfgang Marx and Ciaran Crilly.
The degree gave me a robust grounding in music theory and in music history more generally speaking, with ethnomusicology modules in the final two years with Hwee-San Tan complementing very well the earlier dual emphasis on analysis and music theory on the one hand and music as an index of and participant in cultural history on the other. I built on this work in my MMus at King's College London, where I specialised in contemporary music of various kinds, particularly through the lenses of cultural and political theory.
I drew all these interests and experiences together in PhD research with Keith Potter and Keith Negus at Goldmsiths College, University of London, where I completed a multi-method, culturally, politically and musically analytical doctoral thesis on underground and fringe cultural practices in 2012. I have spent the past couple of years developing the thesis into a book, which will be published as Notes From the Underground by Michigan University Press in 2015. I am working on a book about the X Factor for Zero Books, also due to be published in 2015, and I'm collaborating on the writing of a multi-generic history of the music of the twentieth century. I'm a Lecturer in Music at Goldsmiths, and am also active as a music critic.
