UCD PhD Scholarship in Philosophy of Education and Newman Studies
UCD School of Education in collaboration with the UCD Newman Centre for the Study of Religions is seeking to recruit a PhD candidate to work on a research project in the Philosophy of Education, generously supported by the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain, UCD School of Education, and the UCD Newman Centre for the Study of Religions.
The project will explore the educational legacy of St. John Henry Newman (1801-1890), and will be co-supervised by DrÁineMahon (UCD School of Education) and Dr Daniel Esmonde Deasy (UCD School of Philosophy, UCD Newman Centre for the Study of Religions).
The successful applicant will receive a three-yearscholarshipcovering full tuition fees to undertake a PhD at UCD School of Education. They will also join the UCD Newman Centre as a Centre Researcher and will be invited to audit the MA Seminar ‘John Henry Newman: A Philosophical Perspective’.
The aim of the project is to bring Newman’s seminal writing on education, such as his lectures on the Idea of a University (1852), into conversation with contemporary philosophical work on higher education.
On successful completion, the candidate will be awarded a PhD in Education from University College Dublin.
The successful candidate is expected to start in September 2024 and will receive the following financial support for 3 years:
Full funding for tuition fees.
Research allowance of €1,000.
This is a full-time position for the three-year duration of the PhD programme starting in September 2024.
Applicants must have an academic background in Education, Philosophy, or a cognate discipline.
Applicants must hold high honours in an appropriate Master’s degree.

Proof of English proficiency (IELTS of 7 total score, with no band below 6.5; alternatively, a Master’s degree obtained from an English-speaking institution within the past 3 years from the date of application)
Transcripts of academic records (undergraduate and postgraduate)
A CV
A supporting statement of no more than two pages (font size 12) outlining their academic and professional experience relevant to this project.
An academic writing sample of no more than 5,000 words.
Two letters of recommendation from academic referees.
