International Conference: Wittgenstein, Newman, and Hinge Epistemology.
The Newman Centre in collaboration with the PERITIA project on Policy, Expertise and Trust is hosting an international conference onWittgenstein, Newman andHingeEpistemologyon Monday 9th December and Tuesday 10th December in Newman House (Museum of Literature Ireland).
This will be the biggest Newman conference of my time as Director of the Centre, and will include a wide range of experts speaking on Newman’s theory of knowledge from a philosophical perspective, and how that theory informed philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein’s views, and thereby contemporary debates inepistemology.
The keynote speakers are:
Prof. Annalisa Coliva (UC Irvine)
Prof. Duncan Pritchard (UC Irvine)
Prof. Genia Schönbaumsfeld (Southampton)
Prof. Crispin Wright (NYU & Stirling)
Hinge epistemology is a new branch of philosophy inspired by Ludwig Wittgenstein’s view in On Certainty that ‘the questions that we raise, and our doubts, depend on the fact that some propositions are exempt from doubt, are as it were like hinges on which those turn’ (OC 341). Hinge epistemology is rapidly becoming one of the most exciting areas of epistemology and Wittgenstein studies.
This conference will explore the connections between this new area of research and the views of philosopher and theologian St. John Henry Newman (1801-90), with a view to developing new insights both into hinge epistemology and Newman studies.
