Former UCD sports scholar wins Irish Open
Amateur golfer and former UCD sports scholar (2006), Shane Lowry has won the Irish Open. He is the third ever amateur winner of a European Tour event. The 22 year old took the title from a list of professionals after a play-off against England’s Robert Rock at County Louth Golf Club. Because Lowry is an amateur, he could not claim the €500,000 first prize which went to Rock.
Shane is not the only sporting star from his well-known Offaly family. His father Brendan and his uncles Sean and Mick won all-Ireland football medals for Offaly against Kerry in 1982.
University College Dublin wishes Shane Lowry every success as he decides whether to turn professional after this major win.
