UCC victorious over UUJ in centenary Sigerson final
The Leesiders took the spoils in the final of the Ulster Bank Sigerson Cup at Belfield on Saturday defeating University of Ulster Jordanstown 0-10 to 0-7. The lack of goals was more a reflection on the standard of defence than any lack of drive from the forwards in a game that kept its momentum into injury time. Iconic football manager, Billy Morgan praised his UCC team – who beat pre-competition favourites DCU and hosts UCD on their way to the final. UUJ came through to the final by beating NUI Maynooth.
“I won two Sigerson Cup medals myself and they are among my most treasured possessions.” Morgan believes that the competition is an important experience for players aiming for intercounty places. “Three of our players were brought on to the Cork panel last year and I’m sure you will hear of a lot of the players from this weekend on county teams in the future.”
