UCD academic elected President of International Society of Anglo-Saxonists

Professor Mary Clayton is the first Irish academic to be elected President of the International Society of Anglo-Saxonists (ISAS).

ISAS was established in 1983 to provide all scholars interested in the languages, literatures, arts, history, and material culture of Anglo-Saxon England, with support for their research and the exchange of ideas across all academic disciplines.

ISAS works primarily through biennial meetings where members present papers and discuss topics of mutual interest.

As President of the International Society of Anglo-Saxonists, UCD Professor Mary Clayton, who, along with Dr Alice Jorgensen (TCD) and Dr Juliet Mullins (UCC), prepared the Irish bid for the ISAS 2013 conference, will lead the organisation of the conference in Dublin.

“We are proud that the ISAS conference will come to Ireland for the first time in 2013” says Professor Clayton. “The theme for ISAS 2013 is ‘Insular Cultures’ and it will focus on relations between Britain and Ireland in the Anglo-Saxon period (c. 500- 1100).”

While President of ISAS, Professor Clayton, from the UCD School of English, Drama and Film, University College Dublin, aims to bring scholarly attention to the importance of the links between Ireland and Anglo-Saxon England, and to increase academic links between medievalists working on Irish and English material.

The ISAS 2013 conference will take place in UCD and TCD and will include visits to key historical sites like Glendalough, Tara, Kells, Monasterboice, and Clonmacnoise, with the aim of introducing Anglo-Saxonists from across the globe to medieval Irish sites.

Mary Clayton is Professor of Old and Middle English at the UCD School of English, Drama, and Film, University College Dublin, Ireland.
