Top golf pro, Harrington receives James Joyce Award from UCD L&H Society
One of the world's top golfers, Irishman, Padraig Harrington has been presented with the James Joyce Award from the UCD Literary & Historical Society.
He received the award in recognition of his outstanding achievements which make him ‘an inspirational figure in the lives of many young people in Ireland and across the world’, according to Christine Simpson, Auditor of the UCD L&H Society, University College Dublin.
The award was presented on 02 February, the date James Joyce was born in 1882. Joyce, who the award is named in honour of, was involved in the Literary & Historical Debating Society while a student at the university.

Irish golfer, Padraig Harrington turned professional in 1995. Ten years later, (in 2005) he became the first Irishman to win a USPGA Tour event.
In 2007, he was the first European to win a major since Paul Lawrie (1999), and the first Irishman to win the Open since Fred Daly (1947).
In 2008, he won the USPGA Championship; the first European to win since 1930.
Previous recipients of the UCD L&H Society James Joyce Award include: Hollywood comedian, Will Ferrell; music producer and arranger, the man known as the Fifth Beatle, Sir George Henry Martin; Harry Potter author, JK Rowling; author, Salman Rushdie; former Monty Python, Michael Palin; and The Who Front Man and legendary rock star, Roger Daltrey.
