UCD mourns the death of Maeve Binchy, one of Ireland’s most beloved authors
“There can’t have been laughter every single day. But that’s how I remember it,” said Maeve Binchy of her time as a student at University College Dublin.
Paying his sympathies and condolences on the passing of Maeve Binchy (BA 1959, HDipEd 1960), Dr Hugh Brady, UCD President said:
"It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of Maeve Binchy, one of our most inspiring graduates and one of Ireland’s most beloved authors.
“Our thoughts are with her husband Gordon and the extended Binchy family at this difficult time.”
A distinguished graduate of University College Dublin, Maeve Binchy was awarded the UCD Foundation Day Medal by her alma mater in 2007. The Medal is presented to graduates of the university who have made an outstanding contribution in their field of expertise.
On that occasion, in honour of Maeve, actor Maria McDermottroe read from "Circle of Friends" - set in UCD in the 1950s. And in true Binchy spirit, Maeve took to the stage impromptu to regale the full house with her own personal stories of her student days.
