UCD Professor first Irish-based scientist appointed President of the Federation of European Societies of Plant Biology
Europe's largest and most widely representative society of Plant Scientists, the Federation of European Societies of Plant Biology (FESPB) has announced that UCD Professor Bruce Osborne will serve as its next President.
Founded in 1978, FESPB aims to advance research, education, and the exchange of information amongst plant biologists within Europe and beyond, and to support the publication of the results of research through its six affiliated international journals: Journal of Experimental Botany, Journal of Plant Physiology, Plant Physiology and Biochemistry, Physiologia Plantarum, Plant Biology, Functional Plant Biology.
Under the Presidency of Professor Osborne from the UCD School of Biology and Environmental Sciences, University College Dublin, the FESPB bi-annual scientific meeting will, for the first time in the history of the organisation, come to Ireland. The meeting which will take place in the Convention Centre, Dublin, in 2014, is expected to attract over 1,000 participants from around the world.
Professor Osborne is also the first Irish-based plant scientist to be elected to the board of the European Plant Science Organisation a complementary plant science organisation focussed on improving the impact and visibility of plant sciences in Europe and representing approximately 230 Research Institutes, Departments and Institutes across nearly 30 countries.
During his term of office as FESPB President, Professor Osborne will work to foster greater co-operation and integration between the two organisations and their links with the Global Plant Council (www.globalplantcouncil.org).
