UCD climbs in Shanghai Jiao Tong Rankings

The 2014 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) released by Shanghai Jiao Tong University shows University College Dublin within the top 300 for the first time.

Welcoming the rise in position to 254, the President of UCD, Professor Andrew Deeks said that it reflected the growing reputation of the university’s researchers internationally.

“We have seen that, in terms of research impact, our citation levels are increasing as academics around the world use the findings of our scholars to further their own work.“

For example, two UCD researchers were recently listed among the “most influential names in science” and ranked among the top 1% of citations among 21 broad subject categories.

Professor Des Higgins for his work on developing new bioinformatics and statistical tools for biology and medicine at the UCD Conway Institute and Professor Colm O’Donnell for his biosystems engineering research in the area of food processing technologies at the UCD Institute of Food and Health.

UCD also improved its scores on the indices for citations in science and social sciences as well as in per capita academic performance.

ARWU also published rankings by five broad subject areas.  UCD, with a ranking within the top 200 for the third year running in Life Sciences, is the only Irish university with a subject ranking.

“As we saw in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings last October, (where UCD rose by 26 places), we are constantly improving in areas within our control – such as research output and impact.  I fully expect that we will continue on this upward trend.”

I would like to pay tribute to the UCD faculty who, despite the constraints experienced as a result of national economic recession, have shown remarkable dedication and productivity across the spectrum of academic disciplines.” The President added.
