Introduction
In
accordance with articles 35 and 49 of the Universities Act (1997) the Irish
Universities represented by the Irish Universities Quality Board (IUQB;
Chief Executive, Professor Don McQuillan) and the Higher Education Authority
(HEA) agreed that the first external review of Quality Assurance Procedures
in Irish Universities would take place in 2004.
The European Universities Association (EUA), which has extensive
experience in conducting institutional reviews of universities, was selected
as the agency to carry out the reviews.
The
object of this process is to allow the universities and their stakeholders
to gain the benefit of evaluations by international experts chosen and
briefed by the EUA, complemented by a high-level reference panel established
by the HEA, which will be representative of stakeholders external to the
universities.
Each
university will produce a succinct reflective self-evaluation document and
there will be two site visits, a preliminary visit at the end of April and a
follow-up visit in the Autumn. The
External Expert panel will then present their findings in detail to each
university, and in summary about the sector to the HEA.
A
copy of UCDs self-evaluation document has been sent to each department
and administrative unit and may be consulted by every member of the
University community.
Dates
of Preliminary Site Visit to UCD, 27-29
April 2004.
