Einsteins
General Theory of Relativity, one of the monumental intellectual
achievements of the 20th century,
has made many startling predictions: the existence of black-holes,
gravitational radiation and the big bang beginning of the universe,
for example! Professor Damour will discuss, among other things, the
prediction of gravitational waves in this theory and their
experimental detection. One of the greatest theoretical challenges of
the 21st century
is to reconcile Einsteins theory of a dynamical Space-Time with the
Quantum description of matter. Professor Damour will argue that the
best hope of achieving this reconciliation is String Theory an
ambitious framework, still under construction, which promises to
further revolutionise our view of the structure of Space, Time, Force
and Matter. Primordial Cosmology is one of the arenas where one might
hope to observe consequences of this new synthesis.

Professor Thibault
Damour was awarded the 1996 Einstein Medal and is a member of the
Acadmie des Sciences de Paris. This Public Lecture is taking place
in conjunction with the Journes Relativistes conference
which gathers together in UCD many of the worlds leading
Relativists for specialist lectures and discussions. This is only
the sixth time in forty years that the Journes Relativistes
has taken place outside France and the first time outside mainland
Europe.
