The
Conway Institute of Biomolecular and Biomedical Research.
On Thursday, 6 March the Taoiseach laid the foundation stone at the Conway
Institute, a multidisciplinary research centre which is being
established on a prime site on the Belfield campus.
It will be a �36m
�state-of-the-art� facility of 9,600m2 and will house almost �7m
worth of equipment. The new building will accommodate over 350 research
staff from the Faculties of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Science,
Engineering and Agriculture and the UCD component of the Dublin
Molecular Medicine Centre. When completed, in mid-2003, the Conway
Institute will provide its scientists with world class facilities and
the requisite infrastructural support to enable them to compete

The
Urban Institute Ireland.
On the same day the
Taoiseach went to the grounds of the UCD School of Architecture at
Richview to lay the foundation stone of the Urban Institute. The Urban
Institute Ireland aims to be a powerhouse for developing new ideas
designed to improve the quality of the urban working and living
environment. The building, which will be located in the grounds of the
UCD School of Architecture at Richview, will cost �2.5million.
It will
be ready for occupancy in October 2002 and will be 850 m2 in size. The
only centre of its kind in Europe, the Institute will demonstrate the
highest standards in energy and resource efficiency, with the support of
the Irish Energy Centre (Sustainable Energy Ireland). Over 70
researchers from disciplines such as Architecture, Economics,
Engineering, Environmental Studies, Geography, Planning, Sociology and
Archaeology will work together under the auspices of the Urban
Institute.
