UCD Ladies win their fourth Division 1 Hockey championship
Posted 3 April, 2023
The (opens in a new window)UCD Ladies Hockey have claimed their fourth league championship, winning the EY Hockey League following a 3-0 victory over Pegasus.
The students pipped league rivals Loreto for the title finish by a single point, with the Rathfarnham side leading the Division 1 table ahead of both sides’ final games at the weekend.
A win for Loreto against Pembroke Wanderers, the 2021-2022 season champions, would have seen them claim their first title since 2009.
In a tight affair however, Pembroke held on to a 1-0 lead over the Dublin side, leaving UCD the opportunity to take the title if they secured the win against Pegasus in Belfast.
A massive congrats to our 1s who won the EYHL this afternoon after a 3-0 win away to Pegasus! Well done to Miles, Fiona and all the girls for a fantastic season which we look forward to celebrating on Monday at our annual awards night! A goal from Katie Jane Marshall gave UCD the lead before half time, and this was furthered stretched to 2-0 when the Ad Astra Elite Scholar scored a second time.
Loreto needed Pegasus to stage a fightback in the last quarter but such a hope was dashed when Sarah McAuley scored for the Students with three minutes to go.
The win not only gave the UCD Ladies Hockey the Division 1 title, but it has also secured them a semi-final slot for the Women's Irish Senior Cup, premier knockout tournament played for by the top women's field hockey clubs in Ireland.
Should UCD win the Senior Cup, it will be the eighth time the club has claimed the top Women’s Hockey prize in the competition 120-year history.
