Professor Andrew Keane elevated to IEEE Fellow

The world’s largest professional organisation for electrical and electronic engineering, the (opens in a new window)Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), has elevated (opens in a new window)Professor Andrew Keane, Director of (opens in a new window)NexSys and the UCD Energy Institute, to the rank of Fellow.
The title of Fellow is the highest level of membership awarded by the IEEE and is reserved for those with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in the association's areas of interest.
Professor Keane’s elevation to Fellow was in recognition of his contributions to the integration of resources into energy distribution systems – a field the researcher at the UCD School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering is highly familiar with as Director of (opens in a new window)NexSys, an all-island multidisciplinary energy research programme involving over 40 academics across nine universities, and Director of the UCD Energy Institute.
“I am deeply honoured to be elevated to Fellow. This means a lot to me and is a result of many years spent working with students and colleagues in my School, the Energy Institute and wider academic circles in the field of electrical power engineering,” said Professor Keane.
With over 460,000 members across 190 countries, the IEEE is regarded as a world leading authority on a wide variety of fields including, aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications, biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics.
Recognising the achievements of its members is an important part of its mission, and each year, following a rigorous evaluation procedure, it recommends a select group of recipients for elevation to IEEE Fellow.
The prestigious honour is not only an important career achievement among the technical community but is one that is offered to less than 0.1% of its voting membership in any year.
The elevation of Professor Keane brings the number of IEEE Fellows at UCD to six.
These are: Professors (opens in a new window)Peter Kennedy, (opens in a new window)Bogdan Staszewski, (opens in a new window)Anding Zhu, (opens in a new window)Federico Milano, and UCD President Professor (opens in a new window)Orla Feely.
A Full Professor in the UCD School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Professor Keane’s areas of research include the planning and operations of distribution networks, decarbonisation of the electricity system, and the impact of new energy resources, notably arising from renewable and distributed energy resources.
Previously, he served as Head of the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering. He also is a past Chair of the IEEE’s UK and Ireland Power and Energy Chapter.
In 2015 he co-founded NovoGrid, a UCD spin-out specialising in grid analytics technology, which was recently acquired by Danish renewable energy solutions provider SCADA International.
