Highly Cited: UCD researchers named amongst 2024’s most influential

Posted 19 November, 2024

Professors Paula Bourke and Da-Wen Sun, from the UCD School of Biosystems and Food Engineering, and Eliana B. Souto, UCD School of Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering

Three researchers at University College Dublin are among the top 1% of the world's most cited academics according to the (opens in a new window)latest Highly Cited Researchers report, compiled by Clarivate Analytics.

The 2024 listings have named Professors (opens in a new window)Da-Wen Sun and (opens in a new window)Paula Bourke, both from the UCD School of Biosystems and Food Engineering, as well as Eliana B. Souto, SALI Professor of Pharmaceutical Engineering at the UCD School of Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering as among the 6,636 researchers recognised this year as having demonstrated significant influence in their chosen fields.

To be named as a ‘Highly Cited Researcher’ it must be demonstrated that an individual’s work has disproportionately extended the frontiers of knowledge and contributed to making the world healthier, more sustainable and drive societal impact.

“The Highly Cited Researchers list identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers whose significant and broad influence in their fields translates to impact in their research community,” said David Pendlebury, Head of Research Analysis at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate.

“Their pioneering innovations contribute to a healthier, more sustainable and secure world. These researchers’ achievements strengthen the foundation of excellence and innovation that drives societal progress.”

Each researcher selected for the 2024 listings has authored multiple Highly Cited Papers which rank in the top 1% by citations for their field, and publication year in the Web of Science, over the past decade.

Appearing for the tenth time, Professor Sun has been included among the world's most influential researchers in the field of Agricultural Science since 2015.

An international authority in food engineering research, his work is standard reference material for researchers in the areas of computer vision, computational fluid dynamics modelling and vacuum cooling.

A member of six academies, including the Royal Irish Academy and the Academia Europaea, one of the most prestigious societies in the world, Professor Sun has published well over 1,000 papers during his lengthy and celebrated career.

Named for a fifth time in the Highly Cited Researchers annual listings, Conway Fellow and Head of the UCD School of Biosystems and Food Engineering, Professor Paula Bourke has been ranked among the top 1% of the most cited researchers globally since 2018.

Working largely in the areas of sustainable food systems and novel antimicrobial technologies, her research crosses over to bio-medically relevant issues including infection prevention and cold plasma bioscience.

Her work at the intersection of food and health domains has underpinned her highly cited researcher designation with the Cross-Field recognition.

A member of the UCD Institute of Food and Health, Professor Bourke collaborates widely internationally and with industry, and her work has been supported by SFI, the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine, the Irish Research Council, the Royal Irish Academy as well as Enterprise Ireland and other awards.

Included as a highly cited researcher in 2022 and 2023, this year will be the third time that Eliana B. Souto receives the noted distinction.

A Full Professor of Pharmaceutical Engineering at the UCD School of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering, the design, development, and characterisation of new drug delivery systems are her main research interests.

Having coordinated 11 international projects, Professor Souto has supervised 10 Post-doctoral fellows, 30 PhD students and more than 50 Master Students, as well as acted as Chief Editor, Associate Editor and Member of the Editorial Board of several international scientific journals, and is a consultant in pharmaceutical technology and nanotechnology in the field of intellectual property.

Among all institutions included in this year’s Highly Cited Researchers listings, the United States still continues to dominate the world in research influence, with over 2,500 Highly Cited Researcher designations given to faculty at American institutions in 2024.
