(opens in a new window)Professor David Farrell from the UCD School of Politics and International Relations has been elected as a member of the prestigious Academia Europaea.
Established in 1988, the Academia Europaea is the pan-European academy of humanities, letters and sciences.
It aims to cultivate excellence in scholarship in the humanities, law, economics, social and political sciences, mathematics, medicine, and all branches of natural and technological sciences for the public benefit.
The academy also aims to advance the education of the public in these subjects within Europe.
Academia Europaea members are leading scientists and scholars who collectively aim to promote learning, education and research.
Membership is by invitation only, and invitations are made only after peer group nomination, scrutiny and confirmation as to the scholarship and eminence of the individual in their chosen field.
Professor Farrell was also elected a member of The Royal Irish Academy – Ireland’s leading body of experts in the sciences, humanities and social sciences – in 2013.
In 2019, he won the Irish Research Council’s Researcher of the Year - Impact Award for making “a highly significant contribution in the field beyond academia”.
“The 6,000 or so members of the Academia Europaea come from right across the continent, and this will provide me with a wonderful opportunity to develop new networks in political science and more broadly,” said Professor Farrell.
“I’m greatly looking forward to attending the new members’ ceremony in Barcelona later this year.”
