A team from the UCD School of Medicine has won first place at the National Intercollegiate Surgical Skills Competition for the third year in a row.

More than 40 medical students from across the island of Ireland gathered at RCSI’s surgical simulation facilities in Dublin to take part in the competition.

UCD’s team competed against participants from five other universities: RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences, University College Cork, University of Limerick, Trinity College Dublin and Queen’s University Belfast.

“The National Surgical Skills competition provides medical students interested in surgery an opportunity to develop our skills of working in a team, and that’s what made the day very special,” said Doris Braunstein, who led the winning UCD team.

“This is a great opportunity for future surgeons to cultivate a broad range of skills relevant to the field.”

Open to medical students across the country considering a career in surgery, the competition tests key surgical skills in a simulated environment.

Students must perform laparoscopy (a type of keyhole surgery) and suturing (stitching) exercises as part of the assessment.

“The Intercollegiate Skills Competition was a fantastic opportunity to witness passionate medical students from across Ireland and Northern Ireland showcase their talents in a friendly yet competitive environment,” said Mohammad Alabdulrahman, Chairperson of the RCSI Surgical Society.

“The vibrant atmosphere made the event both engaging and inspiring.”
