The first step in joining the orchestra is to fill out our (opens in a new window)online form. Candidates are expected to have completed Grade VII/VIII ABRSM or equivalent and have some orchestral/ensemble playing experience. Note that demand for places in some sections, such as violins and flutes, is very competitive, and a higher standard may be expected.
You will then be asked to submit an audition by video: this should include a piece of your own choice of 3–5 minutes length, plus an excerpt that you shall be sent in advance. You may be offered a place, or offered a place plus a scholarship. If unsuccessful, you may be placed on a reserve list if there is a chance of a place becoming available later.
You can remain a member of the orchestra while a student, but you will be required to reaudition each year to be awarded a scholarship. Non-students may apply, but can only be offered places where they have not been filled by current students. Scholarships can be held by current students only.

The orchestra possesses a full array of symphonic percussion instruments, including four timpani, plus a Petrof grand piano. Some string instruments are available to loan.
