Agnes Cuming Visiting Speaker 2011

Prof. Terence Irwin, University of Oxford

The UCD School Of Philosophy is delighted to announce that the Agnes Cuming speaker for 2010-11 will be Terence Irwin, Professor of Ancient Philosophy in the University of Oxford , and Fellow of Keble College. Professor Irwin will give two public lectures and one seminar in March 2011. The title of the public lectures is: ‘ Love your neighbour AS yourself?’ A link to Professor Irwin's abstract can be accessed here. The lectures will take place on March 21st and 22nd, at 6pm, at Newman Theatre 1, Newman Building, Belfield. The seminar will focus on the question: ‘Is Aristotle a virtue theorist?’, and will take place on 23rd March at 11am -1 pm, in the School Seminar room, D522.

Terence Irwin, originally from Northern Ireland, took his first degree at Oxford (Literae Humaniores), and his PhD at Princeton, under the supervision of Gregory Vlastos. He taught at Harvard (1972-5), and at Cornell (1975-2006: Susan Linn Sage Professor of Philosophy and Humane Letters from 1995). He returned to Oxford in 2007. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (elected 1995), and a Fellow of the British Academy (elected 2010).

Professor Irwin’s most recent book is a history of moral theory, from Socrates to Rawls, The Development of Ethics (Oxford University Press, 3 vols., 2007-9). His other books are Plato’s Moral Theory (OUP, 1977), Aristotle’s First Principles (OUP, 1988), Classical Thought (OUP, 1989), and Plato’s Ethics (OUP, 1995). He has translated Plato’s Gorgias ( Oxford , 1979), Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics (Hackett, 1985, 2nd ed., 1999), and Aristotle: Selections (with Gail Fine; Hackett, 1995). He has published over a hundred papers, mostly on Ancient Philosophy, but also on the history of ethics, including Aquinas, Kant, and Sidgwick. We are honoured that Professor Irwin will be coming to UCD in the Spring.
