Dragos Calma Awarded Friederich Wilhelm Bessel Prize

Dragos Calma Awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation "Friederich Wilhelm Bessel Prize" for Outstanding Research in Medieval Philosophy

At a ceremony organised by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for its various awardees, Assoc Prof Dragos Calma was awarded the Friederich Wilhelm Bessel Prize "in recognition to the outstanding research" in medieval philosophy, unearthing previously overlooked manuscripts and proving the uninterrupted influence of Greek and Islamic Neoplatonic metaphysics on Western philosophy and theology from the 12th to the 16th century. He was nominated by Prof Theo Kobusch from the University of Bonn and Prof Ruedi Imbach from the University Paris-Sorbonne. This and other awards of the Foundation are given to researchers from all over the world (from Uzbekistan to Nicaragua, from USA to South Korea), in all fields.

Assoc Prof Calma is the first in his field (History of Medieval Philosophy) to receive the prize, and the second researcher based in Ireland (a few years ago another scholar from UCD received the same prize).

Congratulations Dragos.
