PHIL30790 Animated Philosophy is a module offered by UCD School of Philosophy and generously supported by UCD College of Social Sciences and Law. The Module Co-Ordinator is Teaching and Learning Award winner Dr Dan E. Deasy.

The aim of Animated Philosophy is to provide students with an opportunity to take a different approach to learning philosophy; in particular, to use audio/visual creativity, digital competence, humour, and storytelling skills to present philosophical puzzles and theories in non-standard formats such as podcasts; plays; comic books; posters; and animated online 'explainer' videos.

Students who take the course gain invaluable research, design, and team-working skills that they can take into their future careers, as well as evidence of their learning in the form of their own audio/visual project outputs. See UCD https://www.ucd.ie/philosophy/study/undergraduate/

Webinar | Early Moderns on the Power of Philosophy Workshop - October 14th & 15th 2022

October 14th & 15th 2022. 2-day workshop | via D520 Agnes Cuming Seminar Room, Newman Building, Belfield

The power of philosophy was a common topic in the early modern period. Early modern philosophers had descriptive and normative views on the formation of representations like beliefs and affective states like passions, as well as the causation of actions, in response to philosophical argumentation and reflection. This workshop aims to bring together scholars who work on topics and figures in early modern philosophy concerned with the effects of philosophy. It aims to encourage the application of interpretative work on early modern thinkers–including neglected philosophers of the era–to the efficacy of philosophical argumentation and reflection in effecting change in those who engage in it. It also aims to encourage the application of contemporary work in philosophy, cognitive science, and psychology to the views of early modern philosophers in this domain.

Keynote Speaker: Professor Jacqueline Taylor (University of San Francisco)
