Dr Alessia Paccagnini, Assistant Professor at UCD College of Business, was named the STEM Champion at the prestigious Diversity in Tech Awards (DITA), an annual event which celebrates diversity and female achievement within the tech industry.
In its seventh year, DITA recognizes individuals and organizations that are pushing the boundaries of inclusion and equality across the tech sector, and Paccagnini’s win marks a major milestone for both her, and women’s, growing presence of women in STEM fields.
Known for her pioneering work in econometrics and macroeconomic forecasting, Paccagnini’s contributions extend beyond the academic realm. Her research intersects data science and economics, providing invaluable insights that are crucial to both policymakers and businesses. Her advocacy for women in STEM and dedication to mentoring young professionals has earned her the title of STEM Champion at this year’s awards.
Reflecting on her win, Paccagnini said, “It is a fantastic honor to receive the STEM Champion Award; however, what is more important is that it is an acknowledgment of the collective effort that has been made to promote diversity and inclusion in STEM fields with my colleagues. This is not just about my own accomplishments; it is also about the influence of the initiatives in which I have participated, such as co-chairing Women in STEM at UCD and co-leading the Diversity Team for the COST Action in FinTech and AI. The award validates the importance of these efforts while also acting as a powerful symbol of advancement.”
The Diversity in Tech Awards, with 18 categories celebrating trailblazers across various sectors, aims to further the dialogue around equality in tech and inspire lasting change. "This award is about more than just personal recognition—it represents the ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive tech ecosystem," Paccagnini added.
In addition to her academic and research achievements, Paccagnini has been a strong advocate for transparency and collaboration in the tech world, particularly regarding the need for more female representation in data science and related fields. “Creating an inclusive environment is crucial to fostering innovation,” she said. “Diversity should not just be a target, but an everyday practice.”
“It is important to have prominent role models to inspire the generation that will come after us. Young girls are more likely to believe in their own talents and be encouraged to pursue careers in STEM subjects when they observe other women who have achieved success in similar fields,” concluded Dr Paccagnini.
The Diversity in Tech Awards remains one of the industry’s key platforms for celebrating success stories that push the boundaries of inclusivity. With Paccagnini’s recognition as a STEM Champion, the momentum for real change continues, inspiring the next generation of female leaders in tech.
She offers three pieces of advice for women who are unsure about pursuing a career in tech and in STEM.
Discover your specialty and play to your strengths:
The tech industry is very large and varied. Regardless of background or skill set, there is room for everyone. To discover something that truly interests you, concentrate on your areas of strength and investigate several tech fields. Don't feel like you have to fit into a specific category. You can bring your personal touch and your diversity.
Create a network of support:
Make contact with other tech-savvy women. Find your tech models. Online communities, networking gatherings, and mentoring programs offer priceless support and direction. The difficulties and uncertainties can be considerably reduced by exchanging experiences and picking up knowledge from others. The strength of these networks is exemplified by my involvement with Women in STEM at UCD where we organized several gathering activities to support women in STEM and display the potentiality of working in these fields.
Don't be afraid to ask for help and advocate for yourself:
Don't be scared to speak up for yourself and ask for what you need. Look for resources, coworkers, or mentors who can offer direction and assistance.
The award is not only a testament to Dr Paccagnini’s achievements but also underscores UCD Smurfit School’s commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and excellence in STEM. With leaders like Paccagnini at the forefront, the future of women in tech is bright.
