UCD College of Business was ranked 42 nd globally in The Case Centre Impact Index, a new annual ranking of organisations based on the global reach and impact of their case writing.

The case method was established at Harvard Business School over a century ago and has gone on to have far-reaching impact on business education worldwide. Today, the case method remains a cornerstone of management education. In the 2022/2023 academic year, 1,187 organisations across 85 countries purchased cases from The Case Centre for use in their programmes.

The newly introduced Impact Index, derived from usage data from The Case Centre, shines a light on the global  each and impact of business schools' case writing during the previous academic year.

The UCD College of Business total collection includes 60+ cases, many with accompanying instructor materials. Seven of these are prize-winning cases.

"Inclusion in The Case Centre Impact Index underscores our mission of 'Creating a Better World Together'; and amplifies the impact our faculty are having in the world of business and beyond,” said Dean of UCD College of Business Professor Tony Brabazon.

“We are proud to be listed amongst the world’s best case-writing Schools as it celebrates our long tradition of  research that advances academic and practice debate and pushes the boundaries of knowledge creation and innovation. UCD College of Business will continue to be a vibrant nexus of connectivity, flow, and exchange of
knowledge and ideas, drawing on Ireland’s location as a gateway to Europe."

"As a business school, we are committed to the integration of experiential learning into our curricula,” continued Dean Brabazon. “Case studies provide an important vehicle for achieving this, by placing students in real-life decision scenarios which require them to integrate information from multiple sources and make decisions in dynamic environments. We are also committed to the creation of high-quality case materials for a global audience as this process entails a two-way flow between academic thought-leadership and thought-leadership from practice.”

Methodology

To determine the ranking, the Impact Index considers the number of a school's cases adopted, the breadth of adoption across organisations and countries, and the number of individual students taught with the cases. All organisations that published at least one case with The Case Centre in the preceding academic year are eligible.

“Cases have a profound impact in many ways but often receive less recognition than other research outputs,” commented Vicky Lester, Chief Executive Officer of The Case Centre. “The Case Centre Impact Index rewards schools who demonstrate unwavering commitment to case writing, and who strive to ensure the development and dissemination of top-tier cases within the business education community. I hope that the Impact Index will inspire schools to recognise the value of case writing and to invest in resources to support their faculty in this important endeavour.”
