Welcome new and returning Students
The new academic year started for incoming students on Wednesday 5th September with the Annual Commerce Breakfast sponsored by Bank of Ireland Montrose. The Breakfast saw over 500 new students join with staff at this traditional event which has been running for more than 30 years, as noted by Brian Harman, Manager of Bank of Ireland Montrose, speaking at the event. Dr Michael MacDonnell addressing the new students noted that "we are delighted to see that the quality of incoming students is exceptionally high this year, with increased CAO points across all programmes for Irish entrants. Congratulations to all our new students on their great performance in qualifying to enter the Quinn School."
The Breakfast was the first of many events and activities organised to help new students settle in to college life. During the Orientation week, the class of 2015/16 got the opportunity to meet with and benefit from the experience of older students who were organised to show them campus life from a student perspective. Kathleen Kiely, Student Advisor, noted that “the term began with a very positive tone particularly from the energy that the peer mentors put in to welcoming the new students. I hope that this positive experience will continue throughout the term on both academic and social levels”.
As well as experiencing the social side of college life, new students got the opportunity to meet with academics and professional staff throughout the week in a variety of sessions from academic workshops to programme advisory sessions and e-learning tutorials.
Dean of the School of Business, Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh in welcoming the new students, said he hoped that they would enjoy their experiences in the UCD Quinn School. ‘We are proud of what we do at the UCD Quinn School, in particular in the new BComm curriculum’, he said ‘and proud that you have joined us’. He urged students to take on different challenges while they are here: ‘you will find that you are good at something new and/or that the sky doesn’t fall in if you are not’.
International Students
The Quinn School also welcomed over 250 visiting international students who will be with us for semester 1. These students are from exchange partner universities in Europe, Asia, Australia and North America. Happily, the sun made a brief but glorious appearance during the week which allowed our students to explore and experience the campus without the benefit of an umbrella!
