Transfer/Readmission to Spring Trimester Stage 1

Am I eligible?

You must have all of the following

  • All the subject entry requirements for the course. If you didn't have these in your school-leaving exams, it may be possible to meet them from your university examinations.
  • The Leaving Certificate points required for the course in the current year (or equivalent admission requirements such as QQI-FET).
  • Have passed at least 20 credits including sufficient modules and grades relevant to the course you are applying for.

Important Notes for External Applicants:

  • For a UCD degree to be awarded, at least 50% of the overall programme credits must normally have been earned in UCD.
  • Your official, ratified examination results must be supplied by the end of week 2 of the Spring trimester in UCD for the application to be considered. Please check with your current university whether your results will be ratified and available in time.
  • In 2024/25, the final date for receipt of ratified results will be 31 January 2025.

How many places are there?

The number of places available is very small and depends on the numbers who have left during the first trimester. For many programmes there will be no places available. We will not know availability until near the end of the first trimester.

How will I be assessed?

Usually there are more applicants than available places. Admission is competitive and there is no guarantee that any application will be successful.

If your application is eligible, it will be assessed primarily on the compatibility of the modules and the overall academic performance in your third level studies. The assessment may also include your school-leaving results or other relevant criteria.

Offers cannot be made after the third week of the trimester, in line with the Admissions Policy,. Therefore, applications can only be considered if the applicant can present official, ratified results by the end of week 2 of the Spring trimester. In 2024/25, the final date for receipt of ratified results will be 31 January 2025.

Applicants not awaiting Autumn trimester examination results can expect to receive the outcome of their application from Admissions by mid-January.

Applicants awaiting Autumn trimester examination results will receive the outcome of their application after their results are received and processed by Admissions. For current UCD students, Autumn trimester examination results are due to be released on 30 January 2025.

The Spring trimester teaching term will start on 20 January 2025 and consequently, successful applicants may be late registering and joining their new course in the Spring trimester.

Applicants are advised to refer to the relevant minimum eligibility requirementsand to consult the UCD Course Search for course content information.  If, after reviewing that information, you have a query about potential compatibility between your current course and your target course in UCD, the respective College/Programme Offices are best placed to advise you (but please note that they may not be in a position to provide detailed advice in advance of an application being received).

How do I apply?

Subject to availability of places, applications will open from 15 November to 16 December 2024.

If places remain, late applications may be made from 8 to 9 January 2025.

Open the list of courses with places available and use the link beside the appropriate course. Please note that not all courses will have places available to open for applications.

Incomplete applications will not be considered - your application, including application fee, must be submitted and complete by the closing date. Results outstanding at the time of application must be received by week 2 of the Spring trimester. In 2024/25, the final date for receipt of ratified results will be 31 January 2025.

Important Note for External Applicants:  Any provisional results must be centrally issued by your university's Examinations Office. Any offer arising will be conditional on the basis of provisional results being ratified. Ratified means the results are official and final, i.e. no longer subject to change. If your final, ratified results will not be available by week 2 of the Spring trimester in UCD (i.e. by 31 January 2025) then your application cannot be considered.

If you are considering applying for a transfer, please check the fees implications at www.ucd.ie/fees.

Some programmes will not normally consider applicants who have been unsuccessful in a similar programme - full details are on the restrictions page.

All offers of a place are subject toUCD's Terms and Conditions of Offer. In line with the(opens in a new window)Admissions Policy, offers for taught programmes will not be made after the third week of a trimester. Deferral or Leave of Absence is not permissible for the trimester following acceptance of a transfer/re-admission offer.

In some cases, students may wish to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning in addition to that granted by the transfer process (see Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy).

All students must comply with the regulations of the University.

The above is summary information only. Full regulations are included in the (opens in a new window)Transfer Policy.
