UCD has a broad research collaboration footprint.  This is evidenced by collaborating on research publications with researchers based in 153 countries/regions.  Almost 60% of UCD’s research publications have international co-authors while 5.7% of its publications have collaboration with industry.

Collaboration on research publications

From 2015 to 2020, UCD’s researchers collaborated with colleagues from 5,569 institutions on 16,123 research publications. 

UCD has very strong links within Ireland, followed by the United Kingdom, United States and Europe as shown by the volume of co-authored publications.  In recent years, China has entered our top 10 list of collaborating countries.

A similar pattern of collaboration to publication is revealed by an analysis of funded research grants, with the majority of activity occurring with our European partners.  This is no doubt a consequence of the vibrant culture of funded research emanating from the European Union.

Collaboration with Industry

Solving problems with partners in industry has long been a strong feature of UCD’s research portfolio.  From 2015 to 2020, 5.7% of UCD’s publications are co-authored with industry.  This is a high percentage compared to other universities internationally and amounts to 1,238 co-authored publications with co-authors from 446 corporate organisations.  Our top 10 industry collaborators by volume of output are a mixture of large multi-nationals and smaller indigenous organisations.
