Full Professor
Professor Gerardine Doyle is a full professor of Accounting and Taxation and serves as Director of the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School and Associate Dean of the
College of Business at University College Dublin. She is co-chair of the UCD university strategic theme ‘Building a Healthy World’ and represents University College Dublin within Una Europa on the theme ‘One Health’. Una Europa is a European University Alliance representing over 500,000 students and almost 100,000 faculty and staff.
Gerardine’s research agenda centres around the measurement of health literacy, the measurement of patient reported outcomes and the measurement of value delivered by our health systems. She has been Principal Investigator in the conduct of large inter-disciplinary EU funded comparative research projects that have addressed key health policy challenges including health literacy, diabetes self-management, evaluation of Sugar Sweetened Beverage taxes and childhood obesity. Gerardine is the co-ordinator of a H2020 study surrounding the role of technology in the care of Huntington’s Disease.
She said: "A key motivation driving my research is to deliver societal impact by engaging in societal-challenge orientated research to influence national and international health and tax policy. I engage in large inter-disciplinary EU and US funded comparative research projects that centre on measurement in health care, measuring the value being delivered by our health care systems and measuring the health literacy of our populations."
Our comparative studies concern the care of patients with type 2 diabetes, expectant mothers with pre-eclampsia and their infants, children with cystic fibrosis in addition to studies that address the global challenge of childhood obesity with a specific focus on sugar sweetened beverage taxes and the importance of food reformulation. We collect real world data to provide evidence to inform policy.
Gerardine is a team member of the WHO Action Network on Measurement of Population and Organisational Health Literacy (MPOHL), is Advisory Board member of European Institute of Innovation and Technology – Health (EIT-Health) and is chair of the EIT-Health Education task force.
In 2019, she was the Conference Host and Chair of the 4th European Health Literacy Conference at University College Dublin. Gerardine’s research on value measurement in health care includes the care of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, the care of expectant mothers with pre-eclampsia and the care of children with cystic fibrosis, a comparative study between Children’s Health Ireland and Boston Children’s Hospital.
Gerardine was appointed President of the European Institute of Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM) in 2020, a network of over 90,000 scientists across Europe. A key motivation driving her work is to deliver societal impact by engaging in societal-challenge orientated research to influence national and international policy with special emphasis on health policy.
Gerardine also delivers Executive Education courses to non-consultant hospital doctors on Business Fundamentals and Value Measurement for Healthcare. In addition to her role as Head of Accountancy, she has held leadership roles within the UCD College of Business, including academic director of the Executive MBA (Health Care Management) programme and Head of Teaching and Learning. External to UCD, Gerardine was a member of the Education and Qualifications Committee of the Irish Tax Institute and Chair of the board of the Final Admitting Examination, Chartered Accountants Ireland.
She also served on the Audit Committee of the Health Service Executive and was appointed to the board of the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM) in September 2014. In 2016, Gerardine was appointed an academic committee member of the European Association of Tax Law Professors.
