UCD has 168 of world’s all-time top cited scientific authors

  • 04 October, 2024

Elsevier has published the latest version of ‘Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators,’ published and updated by Stanford University academics since 2019, led by Professor John Ioannidis.

It is a publicly available database of top-cited scientists that provides standardised information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator (c-score). The selection is based on the top 100,000 scientists by c-score (with and without self-citations) or a percentile rank of 2% or above in the sub-field.

The database classifies scientists into 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields according to the standard Science-Metrix classification. Field and subfield-specific percentiles are also provided for all scientists with at least five papers.

The latest version is based on a snapshot from Scopus on 1 August 2024, updated to the end of citation year 2023. The published version reflects Scopus author profiles at the time of calculation.

Some 168 authors in the database are UCD academics in the following fields:

  • Clinical Medicine
  • Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry
  • Biomedical Research
  • Engineering
  • Physics and Astronomy
  • Enabling and Strategic Technologies
  • Information and Communication Technologies
  • Chemistry
  • Social Sciences
  • Public Health and Health Services
  • Earth & Environmental Sciences
  • Biology
  • Historical Studies
  • Economics and Business
  • Built Environment and Design

Metrics with and without self-citations and ratio of citations to citing papers are given and data on retracted papers (based on Retraction Watch database) as well as citations to or from retracted papers have been added in the most recent iteration of the research.
